Things To Do In Louisiana for Seniors During Fall

There’s no better feeling here, in South Louisiana, than the first cool front of the year!  It’s almost like the rainbow after the storm; we’ve survived the dog days of summer, and the promise of better weather is right around the corner.  We all know the feeling… you walk outside late September or early October morning, and there is a crispness in the air.  Instead of being met with a wall of humidity when you open the door, a cool breeze greets you.  The next thing you know, you’re making a grocery list: chicken, andouille, the holy trinity, and the rest of the fixins’ because “gumbo weather” is officially here!

The fall weather is always welcomed and makes outdoor activities enjoyable and accessible for just about everyone, regardless of age.  For this reason, it seems like there are a host of activities and events to partake in during the Autumn months.  Here are a few of the favorites that we recommend you try!

Cheer on the T-I-G-E-R-S

Head on over to Tiger Stadium, or join a backyard tailgate, and enjoy the game-day festivities!  Whether you’re on campus or in the comfort of your own home, you can close your eyes and practically hear the Golden Band from Tigerland inviting you to have a good time!  If LSU isn’t your team of choice (we apologize), then tune into whichever game tickles your fancy and celebrate with family, friends, and good food!

Visit a Pumpkin Patch

Gather the grandkids, a group of friends, or make a solo trip to visit a local pumpkin patch.  Many offer a plethora of fall activities to enjoy while you’re there, as well as picking out a pumpkin to bring home.  The fun doesn’t stop there; once back at your house, you can incorporate your pumpkin(s) into your home fall decor with a pretty tablescape or a fall-themed display by your front door.  If you’d prefer to take it a step further, bake up a delicious pumpkin dish; pumpkin pie, pumpkin bread, and pumpkin soup are just a few “must-try” fall favorites!

Grab Your Gardening Gloves

Now is the perfect time to plant a garden filled with wonderful winter veggies.  Beets, Swiss chard, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, and onions are just a few of the many hearty vegetables that thrive during the cooler months.  Not only will you benefit from the nutritious harvest in a few short months, but gardening itself has many healthy perks!  If you enjoy gardening, you may not even realize that you’re getting aerobic exercise.  Additionally, digging into the dirt and watching your plants grow can relieve stress and ward off depression!

Pack a Picnic

As long as you have the crisp fall air, you can set up a picnic just about anywhere!  A pretty park, a grassy spot along the river, or even your backyard would serve as the perfect setting.  Enjoy a brisk walk before or after your picnic to sneak in a little bit of exercise!  You could even plan it around a specific event, like an outdoor movie, live music, or a birthday celebration.  Throw some simple sandwiches and fresh fruit in a cooler, or jazz it up a bit with fancy cheeses and hors d’oeuvres to make it a special occasion!

Start making plans to take full advantage of the beautiful fall weather that’s just around the corner and escape to the great outdoors.  Your next adventure is just steps away, and the possibilities are endless!  After the sweltering heat of summer, fall is, without a doubt, a breath of fresh air!
